Abstract
Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia in which everybody is allowed to insert articles and that free of charge. Concerning encyclopaedias this constellation reveals many interesting questions and themes which will be discussed in the following article.
In this article properties of communities will be explained in summary. The motivation of people to act in communities will be discussed in general terms. Wikis represent an interaction platform for communities and will be presented. These elements are the core of Wikipedia. The Wikipedia will be examined more closely. Next to its history and formula for success themes like topicality and quality of articles, costs, vandalism, prognosis and comparisons with other encyclopaedias will be embraced.
Finally a comparative study will be visualized which probed if there is a relationship of web affinity among certain groups to the amount of available articles and their quality concerning the group’s specialism.
