Abstract
Following the popular successes of the free software Linux and the free content of Wikipedia and the CreativeCommons project, "free networks" are gaining in popularity. Using affordable hardware and the unlicensed part of the frequency spectrum, single nodes are connected into ever larger networks. In small and medium-sized regions free networks are constructed that resemble in many ways the "original" Internet as it was created. As much as the motivations of the individual players are of interest, so is the economic and legal context in which they act. Starting from the explicitly formulated foundations of free networks, the professed ambition of many initiatives to form a democratic network free of censorship will be addressed. Likewise discussed will be the interrelation with similar free projects.
